Identify the appliance from its permanent product label and copy the serial number as well as the model. The captured manuals distinguish HP170 from HP280 on their covers and list the underlying Midea identifiers inside; they are not interchangeable shorthand for one controller. Chromagen’s warranty instructions say the serial number must be supplied for service and warn that omitting it can delay the request. If the label is weathered, photograph it in even light and compare the readable model with the exact cover title rather than choosing a family from tank capacity or cabinet shape.

The HP170 and HP280 publications each document an integrated controller used for operating settings and fault reporting. Normal temperature or mode information can occupy the same screen that later shows a protection code, so a snapshot of the complete display is preferable to recalling one character. The controller sections also contain user settings, but the fault tables include actions intended for trained service personnel. Read the screen without removing panels, preserve any leading letter or digit, and tell the service contact which HP series and manual revision you matched before describing the indication.

Where HP170 and HP280 codes appear

Chromagen publishes the HP170 error table on PDF page 22 of Version 1.3 and the HP280 table on page 20 of Version 2.2. These are display-code tables tied to the models named by each publication. One especially useful boundary is LA: both manuals describe it as a normal low-ambient-temperature condition for which repair is unnecessary, so this site does not mislabel LA as a fault. Other rows are published only with their own captured wording and page anchor. A code from an HP280 screen should never be resolved through the HP170 table merely for convenience.

Model scope differs across the two manuals

HP170 Version 1.3 names the Chromagen HP170 and Midea RSJ-15/190RDN3-C. HP280 Version 2.2 instead covers HP280 and the RSJ-23/300RDN3-B and RSJ-23/300RDN3-C identifiers. That explicit naming is why the corresponding Midea records can share these evidence sets, but it does not authorise mappings for look-alike suffixes elsewhere in the registry. The HP170 and HP280 also have different table lengths and page layouts. Treat the printed identifier—not brand familiarity, nominal litres, or a similar front panel—as the decisive compatibility evidence.

Chromagen’s official heat-pump service and warranty page links product registration, the applicable Midea warranty documents, and a warranty or service request. Its online request form asks for installation address, installation date, product range, serial number, and a concise description of the issue. Prepare a photograph of the plate and the controller before submitting. The form also explains that an attendance can be chargeable when the issue is outside warranty or is not a defective Chromagen component. Use the published request route for an assessment rather than assuming a displayed code by itself proves coverage.

Public evidence is strong for the two captured Australian HP manuals: exact cover scope, controller instructions, code tables, normal-condition exclusions, and warranty contact information are all readable. The record does not establish that every Chromagen heat pump, every HP280 revision, or every related Midea product uses these controllers. Nor does it expose proprietary diagnostic tools or justify expanding a table beyond its named units. Pages on this site therefore show codes only for explicit manual mappings.
